What happens to the Christmas trees?

While crusing through the city during the holidays I noticed there were lots of Christmas trees all decorated and looking pretty. I have to admit that is the best part of San Francisco during the holidays, but upon further inspection I learned the trees were real. Not plastic nor fiberglass. At first I thought they came with some of the roots, but when I went to City Hall one day I saw Sunset Scavenger cutting the tree up in pieces with a saw.
The tree did not have any roots, so I flipped out and started to cry.
Why waste a tree for the sake of a decoration?
This is what I discovered.

William from Sunset Scavenger says the trees are taken to the recycle yard. In that yard the metal is stripped from the trees and then they are cut up a little more and sent through a machine that turns them into mulch. The mulch is then taken to the parks, especially Golden Gate Park and used on the grounds.
The trees are in fact specifically grown for this city.
The moral of this story.
The trees are recycled not burned nor thrown in a dump.
In my opinion that is a happy ending.
